JINX
RIYA Kamat
I made this Munny doll to resemble Jinx from the show Arcane. I really like the character and with a new season coming soon, I was inspired to do something related to that. For the materials, I used acrylic paint to color almost everything. The hair was made using oven bake polymer clay. I mixed together turquoise and iridescent clay to give it a bit of a sparkly effect. It was exciting and challenging to take such a complex character design and try to simplify it to fit a Munny without losing the identity of the character.

I guess there’s not much of a back story here. I’ve always been fond of prehistory, and I thought it would be cool to transform the Munny doll into what is probably one of the most well-known non-avian dinosaurs that was found within the United States and more broadly within North America.
Construction: The form is built out using polymer clay on top of a Munny doll and painted with acrylic. The eyes are glass half spheres that have been painted on the flat sides, then glued on.

The origin of my Slow Down Snails LLC: My daughters are 19 months apart. One evening when they were little, I remember wanting to get something crossed off my endless “to do” list. The girls wanted something. I just wanted to finish loading the dishwasher. Then it dawned on me: The dishes and laundry would always be there, my girls wouldn’t. I knew I needed to slow down. I needed to reflect on what the true priorities of my life were- not just my girls, but MYSELF. Taking care of myself IS taking care of others.
I make and paint these ceramic snails in Reston, VA. Of the hundreds I’ve made, they currently live on three continents. They sit on night stands, next to car odometers, by kitchen sinks, on desks, and anywhere else a slow down reminder is needed.

As Fall settles in, the desire for a tidy lawn prompts many to rake the leaves to the curb and dispose of them in the city landfill. Doing so also removes the eggs laid by pollinators all summer, reducing biodiversity and contributing to declining insect populations. Consider keeping at least a percentage of the leaves that fall in the yard. As they break down, they create fantastic soil and act as free mulch!

“‘I see!’ Said the Queen, who had meanwhile been examining the roses. ‘Off with their heads!’” The Queen of Hearts is one of the most iconic characters in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She has inspired Halloween costumes, spin-off stories, movies and so much more! Her color palette and character design inspired my doll’s appearance.
